The Amazon Echo app is now available to download in the UK from the google play store. I have just downloaded this myself and have started testing!
You can now change the voice from US to UK English. Doing this seems to have lost me the US functionality I previously had. I don’t recommend doing this until more testing has been done if you’re worried about losing that.
UPDATE: Changing the language back to US English brings back US functionality at this point. Note, I have not yet performed any kind of reset on the device.
I don’t seem to be able to play from Amazon Prime Music yet…
…more to come
Did you reset the Echo and setup again, or just change location and language?

Not yet! Going to have a play first.

It’s on the Apple Store as well, named Amazon Alexa. Good news is it recognises my Raspberry Pi which was registered on the Amazon.com web site previously.

It’s interesting that it sees the Raspberry Pi – I didn’t think that anything using the Alexa Voice Service was going to work until next year. My triby just shows up as being offline in the UK app

Can’t seem to access the us alexa web app anymore as it defaults to the uk one! Even trying pitangui.amazon.com redirects.

Actually, scratch that – it lists my Pi as a device, but doesn’t see it as online. US app still sees it.
Looks like I need to dig a bit more.

Hmmm, maybe AVS devices like Triby might be supported after all. The UK app now says “Amazon is excited to bring you Alexa on Triby. Please refer to the providers’ website for details on supported Alexa features and functionality. Follow the link below to customize your Alexa experience.” It’s still showing as being off line though

Done a bit more digging. The Raspberry Pi uses AVS (Alexa Voice Services) and these aren’t coming to the UK until 2017, according to this:
https://developer.amazon.com/avs
So, although the Alexa App knows about my Pi, it doesn’t see it as being online. Running the US Alexa web page still sees my Pi as active, so I guess I’ll need to keep using that for now…..which is a pity as it would be interesting to use some of the UK Skills that are coming up this week.

Invoxia told me last week that AVS would not be available until next year. It was therefor a surprise to see it appear in the UK app.
I too have resigned myself to keep my triby set up as a US echo . It will be interesting running a mixed economy when my dots arrive next month!

Does IFTTT work under UK Mode?

Did other people find that IFTTT still worked for them? I found that IFTTT still worked, but she still said “sending that to IFTTT” with a US accent. Ditto reading from kindle. Everything else in British accent. I have two Echos, with one still set to US. Wondering if that made a difference?

I am a little apprehensive how it is going to migrate for me.. My username Registered for the US version is the same as my username for.co.uk, so I can’t just log in on a different address. I’m also dreading having to set all my smart home stuff from scratch if it doesn’t carry over.

I’m in uk and have a US echo have been using a while and now want to make to English. How are you changing Alexa’s language between US and UK. I can’t see an option for that with my existing Amazon account. My echo always goes to Alexa.amazon.com server even if I reset echo, re-install app and setup from scratch with same account. Im using my regular uk Amazon email. I tested with a new Amazon account and on adding echo it asked which language for first time. My original Amazon account seems locked to first chosen language, which was US default for us Amazon, as doesn’t ask again on my add device. Need help!

Go into settings and look for “Wake Word”, just below that should say “Language”

I don’t have an echo yet but I believe you can sign out of Alexa.amazon.com webpage then sign back in. The page should then redirect to UK site. Then select your connected alexa device from the settings, then change your device location to your UK address. This should change the voice to UK. I think that should work…

I am trying to update the address from American Samoa zip 96799 the settings don’t appear to allow a UK format for the address. Does anyone know how I can update?
Also it doesn’t pick up my prime music… But it does list my playlists but cannot play them within the App…. Yet it is registered with my UK Amazon account…. I guess it will update in a day or two?

The format is strange, if you just start typing in the web app it should accept your address. Start with your house number and just type away.

Yep same issues here when swapping to UK voice. I lose access to Pandora etc. Prime music is also not working for me when I use the UK voice even though I have prime membership. Hopefully the prime music access will be sorted as I don’t mind losing Pandora if I have a fully functional prime account.

I’m still having problems fully switching to UK. After creating a new dummy UK amazon.co.uk account, then registering Alexa with that, then de-registering and re-registering with my real prime enabled amazon.co.uk account the choose language option appeared in the app. So, that was fiddly for a start. Alexa now speaks English. But, in the app under the “About the Amazon Alexa app” it still shows hostname as “alexa.amazon.com”. It should be showing “alexa.amazon.co.uk” (as i saw when i created a new uk account as a test). Because its still connecting to the US server, its trying to check the wrong server for my prime account (eg, for music). Ive found no way to switch my account to alexa.amazon.co.uk despite numerous resets, app re-installs, looking under devices & content on UK and US site. I also have a ghost ‘echoism.io’ in my Alexa app from when i tried Alexa from a web browser and i wonder if that’s holding my account on alexa.amazon.com. I can see no way to de-register echoism.io instance either – no deregister appears in the app, or under amazon’s “devices & content” in UK or US.
I hope my report helps others who are not getting prime music to work due to still connecting to US server. But has anyone got a solution to get it connect to alexa.amazon.co.uk if they’re stuck connecte to alexa.amazon.com?

all gone fella. The issue is these skills use alexa.amazon.com, so at present are not compatible with alexa.amazon.co.uk…… so amazon hasn’t transferred the .com skills. Alas your stuffed until all those skills and ios and android apps also work only with .com.
They have done it because Alexa has never been officially available in the UK so you don’t actually exist, your problems don’t exist either. Tough cheese…..
I know this doesn’t help nor does it fix your issues, but if Amazon are to regionalise the products/purchasing, prices and services. This was bound to happen.
That said it would have been nice to have an export options for any configs, but that’s IT for you.
Hopefully Amazon will speedily get these skills and the suppliers get the apps updated pronto, but don’t expect some of the suppliers who have based their products for the US market, that you might not get some or all of them ever to work. And you may need to cough up for UK licenced products to replace them.
I have setup some Yonomi stuff, that’s gone too but crying over it aint going to get it fixed. Chin up

If you have smartthings, which I believe is now listed and working in the UK app. then there may be a workaround for the loss of IFTTT.
Instead of having your IFTTT recipies use an alexa voice trigger, have the recipies triggered by a smartthings button/switch, then create the relevant virtual buttons in your smartthings system by using the developer login (ide.smartthings.com).
You can then ask alexa to “turn on”, “turn off”, “open”, “close” whatever button or switch you have created, then have this picked up by IFTTT as the “IF”.
Hopefully this may help some get that IFTTT functionality back.

okay, this is weird. my wife is on my amazon household and when we signed in to her account on alexa.amazon.co.uk, it shows me this: http://imgur.com/a/CNqIU. When she tries to sign-in, it redirects to amazon.co.uk site to authenticate and her account stays on the .co.uk site. But when I sign-in it redirects back to the .com account.

Change the “voice” in the settings to English – uk if you want the UK version. Try it after midnight.

Has anybody who used their account to run the echo with US settings got it working as a UK device yet. I’ve reset, changed voice, deregistered, reregistered, but it appears my account is locked as a US based account and every time I reset as soon as I setup it asks for my UK login, then my US login and restores it all back exactly how it was.

I’ve been following this thread since I brought my Alexa home from the US. Even though we’re launch day today, I cannot seem to unlink my US account (with the same email address) no matter how many times I reboot, deregister etc. It’s getting really annoying, the interface keeps changing and I am stuck in a redirection loop always back to the USA version, even though I’ve set the language to UK & address. I am wondering if I will need to contact support.

Any update? I just bought my Echo here in the UK today, but as I also have a US Amazon account with the same email address, it keeps defaulting to that one, which does NOT have Prime associated with it (my UK account does). Your last update was 28 September – almost two months ago yet. Has there been a fix yet??

Yes – you should call Amazon and ask for the Echo support team. They need to move you over to the UK system if you aren’t already! You can get the UK app in the app store now and everything should work correctly for you.
